The Ada County Sheriff's Office wants to get the word out about local residents being victimized by a new phone scam.
Several residents have reported getting calls from people posing as Internal Revenue Service employees. The scammers tell taxpayers that they owe money to the IRS then tell taxpayers to get a prepaid credit card, load it with money, then call a number with card information.
IRS officials say the scam has resurfaced around the U.S.
The agency does not call residents with tax-related notifications. The IRS sends notifications to taxpayers through the mail. The agency never asks for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the phone.
