New wildfire burning near Idaho-Oregon border threatens state park

The Cherry Road Fire, estimated to be about 3,500 acres, began Sunday afternoon about 16 miles west of Homedale, according to Bureau of Land Management officials in Vale, Ore.

The fire is expected to grow, officials said in a release. Currently, 15 single engine air tankers, 3 helicopters, 12 engines, 2 water tenders and 2 bulldozers are on site, with 10 additional engines on order.

According to the release, the fire is burning two miles east of the Owyhee Reservoir. It is threatening Succor Creek State Park.

Fire managers are hoping cooler weather and higher humidity Sunday evening will give them an opportunity to quash the fire before it gets much larger.

Vale and Burns BLM personnel (also known as the High Desert Type 3 Team) will take over fire management Monday.
