Fatal, brush fire in crash near Firebird Raceway

An Emmett man died at the scene of a two-vehicle crash near Firebird Raceway on Friday that started a brush fire, according to an Idaho State Police release.

Jose Flores-Martinez, 52, of Emmett, crossed the center line driving northbound in his 1990 Honda Accord on Idaho 16 and crashed into a 2014 Jeep Wrangler drive southbound by Thomas Weber III, 47, of Eagle, ISP said. The collision occurred around 5:45 p.m. Friday near milepost 104. Weber’s Jeep caught fire, starting a brush fire, according to the release.

Officials said both drivers were taken to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, as were Weber’s passengers, Thomas Weber Jr., 70, and two juveniles. Flores-Martinez’s passenger, Goyo Ayllon, 34, of Emmett, died at the scene of the crash due to injuries.

Police said it’s unknown if Ayllon was wearing a seatbelt, though all other individuals involved in the crash were wearing theirs.

The road was blocked for several hours while crews cleared the scene. The crash is still under investigation by ISP.
