A 20-year-old man died in the Snake River near Marsing Island Park Monday, the Owyhee County Sheriff's Office reports.
Darius Cheriji of Caldwell was swimming with his 13-year-old sister when they started having trouble in a water hole about 30 feet from the river bank, said Lynn Bowman, chief deputy for Owyhee County Sheriff’s Office. The siblings were not experienced swimmers and they could not touch the river bottom, Bowman said.
Their father jumped in and swam to help, but when he reached Darius his son began to pull him underwater, Bowman said. The father separated himself from Darius, grabbed the daughter and brought her to the river bank. When he returned into the water there was no sign of Darius, Bowman said.
A relative of the family called dispatchers at 3:59 p.m. and reported the incident. Three boats with marine patrols from Owyhee and Canyon County and four other privately owned boats searched for Darius, whose body was found at 8:10 p.m. about 30 yards from where he had been struggling.
