A 5-year-old Boise boy hospitalized after a near-drowning Sunday afternoon died shortly after midnight in a Boise hospital, the Ada County Coroner reported late Monday afternoon.
Coen Hendrix accidentally drowned in the Middle Fork of the Boise River, Coroner Dotti Owens said after an autopsy was completed. He was pronounced dead at 12:05 a.m. Monday.
An adult and the boy were crossing the river by foot in northern Elmore County when the child lost his footing and was swept under by the current, the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office reports. The adult recovered the boy downriver and performed CPR with the help of bystanders.
Elmore County Sheriff’s deputies, Pine ambulance and an air ambulance from St. Luke’s responded to the area of Roaring River and Middle Fork roads, transporting the child to St. Luke’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Boise.
