Nampa Fire Chief Karl Malott is in serious condition at St. Alphonsus hospital in Boise following a motorcycle crash on Interstate 84 near the Sand Hollow Exit, according to an Idaho State Police press release.

A hospital spokesman said Sunday afternoon that Malott had improved slightly from critical condition earlier in the day.

Malott, 53, was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle eastbound on Saturday afternoon when he rear-ended a Chevrolet Malibu driven by 58-year-old Juanita Sarceda, of Nampa.

ISP said Malott was not wearing a helmet. He was taken to the hospital via air ambulance.

Sarceda and her passenger, 56-year-old Marta Villareal, were both wearing seatbelts and were uninjured.

"Fire Chief Karl Malott is in critical condition. He has lots of support, and my prayers are with him for a full recovery," said Nampa Mayor Bob Henry said in a statement Saturday evening after visiting Malott at the hospital.
