By the numbers: Idaho notches a hollow win in wage growth

The good news for Idaho is that its median wage increased to $14.93 an hour in 2014, a 25-cent bump from the year before. The bad news is that Idahoans earning the median – or the point at which half of earners make more and half earn less – won’t see much difference in their account balances. After factoring buying power lost to inflation, Idaho’s median wage increased by 1 cent.

Idaho’s median is tied with Florida’s for seventh-lowest in the nation after ranking sixth-lowest in 2013. Alaska had the highest median of any state at $21.73 an hour. Mississippi ranked last at $13.76.

The only sector paying a higher median wage in Idaho than the nation as a whole was fishing, farming and forestry occupations, which at a median of $11.28 an hour paid nearly 16 percent more than those industries in the rest of the country. The sector with the largest disparity between Idaho and the nation was arts, design, entertainment, sports and media occupations, which paid a median wage of $15.22 in Idaho – just 70 percent of the national median.
