A Southern California startup is establishing its main office in Boise, where it says it will hire software engineers into six-figure jobs. Their task: to help develop a micro-investing app so ordinary people can invest easily in cryptocurrencies like bitcoin.
Cred, based in Santa Monica, has been negotiating for office space in the U.S. Bank building Downtown. Founder and CEO Brendon McQueen, 35, an Idaho native, seeks engineers skilled in React Native, a development tool for making mobile apps.
He answered questions by email.
What’s your story?
I grew up in Sun Valley and dropped out of high school but still ended up graduating from Columbia. I then worked in L.A. for 10 years, and founded and ran Tuition.io, a market leader in enterprise student loan benefits for Fortune 500 employers.
Why did you pick Boise for the main office?
Boise is the fastest growing city in the U.S. (according to Forbes) and is only two hours from my hometown of Sun Valley. There’s a great pool of talent and amazing lifestyle opportunity for Cred’s current and future team. Robert McQueen, my cousin, lives in Boise. He helped convince us that Boise is a fantastic place to start a new company.
What’s the company’s story?
Cred is an micro-investing platform focused solely on lowering the barrier to entry for cryptocurrency (or “digital currency”). Our app is making it extremely simple for novice and professional crypto investors to learn about, buy and sell different cryptocurrencies with confidence that they’re making educated decisions, not just blindly buying into a coin. Users can start by investing an amount as small as $10, and investments are limited to $2,000/month.
Have you tried anything like this in business before?
This is my second go as CEO of a tech firm, but crypto is a new and exciting place to play.
How many people does Cred have on staff now?
How many does it expect to have in Boise? And to hire?
We cannot offer any estimated numbers at this time.
Will some or all of them be new hires?
All of them will be new hires.
Will some be brought up here from down there?
Who owns the company?
Cred is owned by management and investors including Science Inc. [a Los Angeles startup studio] and other angel investors.
What do you hope to accomplish?
We hope to create a big tech company in Boise that helps people thrive financially both by working for Cred or by using our app.
