The independent theater chain The Reel Theatre says it will open a first-run movie theater in Kuna in 2016.
The 25,000-square-foot theater will be southwest of the intersection of North Meridian and Deer Flat roads near the Ridley’s Family Market and Ace Hardware.
The Reel Theatre now operates seven theaters, including two in Boise and locations in Nampa and Pocatello. Most of the company’s sites, including all of its Idaho locations, are second-run theaters, meaning they cannot run movies while they are played by nearby first-run theaters.
“We have to find a niche for our first-runs, because we can’t compete with the big chains,” business manager Eldon Sorensen said. “We’ve been watching this area for a number of years. Seeing the type of growth that’s going on in the (Treasure) Valley, we feel good about it.”

The company has begun soliciting contractor bids and did not yet have a timetable for breaking ground or for completing construction, Sorensen said. He expected 15 to 20 employees to work there once movies begin showing sometime next year.
The planned opening was first reported by the Kuna Melba News.
