Some Texas homeowners get first glimpse of wildfire destruction

MINERAL WELLS — Possum Kingdom Lake residents began to learn the fate of their homes Wednesday as cooler, more humid weather aided firefighters who have been battling wildfires in the area for a week.

Kathy Lanpher believes that the fireplace is all that remains of her 1,500-square-foot home on Swallow Cliffs Trail in the Gaines Bend development.

"It just looks leveled," Lanpher said after seeing a photo taken by a neighbor. "I just keep thinking of what I left. I wonder about my grandmother's brooch."

The Texas Forest Service reported that fire has destroyed 160 homes, including 37 in Gaines Bend, 56 in nearby Sportsman's World and 24 at Hog Bend. Two churches have been destroyed as well.

On Wednesday, a federal firefighting team moved in to take charge at the fire, known as the PK Complex. The team is operating from the old Fort Wolters site near Mineral Wells and was sent to relieve volunteer firefighters.
