Recipe: Cheese Fondue

You don't need to go to a restaurant to serve up this retro fave. You don't need to spend a lot of time either if you use this classic "Real Simple" recipe.

Serve the cheese sauce with cut up bread, apples and pears. If you've got leftover fruit — or some strawberries hanging out in the fridge or freezer — melt some chocolate for a dessert dip. To melt chocolate, place chips or coarsely chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe container and microwave on medium for 1 to 4 minutes, or until the chocolate turns shiny.

Remove from microwave and stir until chocolate is completely melted. Hurry up and dip your fruit before it hardens again.

Yield: 4 servings

1 garlic clove, halved

1/2 cup dry white wine

1 10-ounce tub refrigerated Alfredo sauce

1 8-ounce bag shredded Swiss cheese (that's about 2 cups if you shred your own)

1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 tablespoon kirsch or brandy (optional)

Rub the garlic clove around the inside of a fondue pot or nonaluminum saucepan. Add the wine and heat until boiling.

Reduce temperature to low and add Alfredo sauce, cheese and nutmeg. Stir constantly until cheese is melted and very hot. Add the kirsch or brandy (if using). Serve warm.
