Utah restaurant chains sure love Boise. This latest area newcomer just opened

Utah has feasted on the Boise area in recent years — at least when it comes to restaurant expansion.

Mo’ Bettahs. R&R Barbecue. Crumbl. Swig. As of September, Aubergine Kitchen. All have infiltrated the Treasure Valley.

Now another tasty newcomer, Zao Asian Grill, has arrived. Opened Wednesday at 2126 N. Eagle Road, it has taken over the former home of now-defunct Duck Donuts at The Village at Meridian.

Known as Zao Asian Cafe back home in Utah, Zao goes by “Grill” in new markets.

“Meridian, we’re so excited to be your new spot for fresh, flavorful Asian-inspired meals!” Zao exclaims on its Yelp page. “At Zao Asian Grill, you create your own bowl, wrap, taco, or salad with fresh veggies, quality proteins like chicken, steak, or tofu, and sauces that bring bold flavor to every bite.

“We keep it simple: real food made fast, with options that fit any lifestyle — whether you’re looking for something hearty, light, or completely plant-based. Stop by for a quick lunch, family dinner, or a healthy option on the go. We can’t wait to share our food (and a little bit of ‘Live Zaofully’ energy) with the Meridian community!”

Founded in 2015 in Salt Lake City, Zao has grown to 22 locations. The majority are in Utah. But the chain, which does not franchise, has inched into Colorado, too. And in Idaho, it’s also planning an Eagle store in early 2026.

Bowls, tacos (served in threes), banh mi wraps, soups and salads on the Zao menu in Meridian cost $9.25 (vegetarian), $10.25 (natural chicken or organic tofu), $11.25 (braised pork) and $12.25 (seared steak).

Most customers across the Zao chain seem to walk out satisfied and happy. A location in downtown Salt Lake City rates 4.5 out of 5 stars on Google.

“Tasty, healthy, affordable fast food,” wrote a recent reviewer, who gave it 4 stars. “This is our go-to for takeout ... Great for anyone with dietary restrictions — it’s easy to get a balanced vegan meal, or to avoid gluten (which they keep out of most of their staple sauces & mains).”

Zao Asian Grill’s hours in Meridian are 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, except for Fridays and Saturdays, when the restaurant will remain open until 10 p.m. The plan is for online ordering to be rolled out soon.
