Michael Deeds: 5 Things You Should Do This Weekend in Boise

1. SQUEEZE IN (FREE) FUN AT THE FAIR

The Western Idaho Fair runs Aug. 21-30 at Expo Idaho. Want to get in free? Head down between noon and 2 p.m. Aug. 21, when admission is gratis. Find out about the grandstand music entertainment, new exhibits and more right here. And don’t forget about the carnival rides. (Gulp.)

2. DISCOVER A JEWELL

Idaho singer-songwriter Eilen Jewell, recently profiled by NPR’s “Morning Edition,” will celebrate at an album-release concert Aug. 21 at Visual Arts Collective. This is a must-see for fans of Americana music. [More]

3. GET ZANY

Listeners of the syndicated “Bob and Tom Show” are familiar with veteran comedian Bob Zany. He’s a classic. I totally appreciate his perpetually semi-disgusted look. Have a ball laughing with him Aug. 21-23 at Liquid Laughs. [More]

Warning: profanity (and funny Jackpot, Nev., references)

4. GO COUNTRY

The Village at Meridian’s weekly Rock the Village series continues Aug. 21 with country singer Charley Jenkins. Locals Brook Faulk and Johnny Shoes open. The party goes from 6:30 to 9:45 p.m. Afterward, go see “American Ultra” at Village Cinema. That movie looks good.

5. BANG YOUR HEAD

Did you attend this year’s Mayhem Festival? I did. Punish your eardrums some more Aug. 22 when metal band Lamb of God blows the roof off the Revolution Center. Bullet for My Valentine and Motionless in White open. [More]
