Michael Deeds: UPDATED: Alive After Five today in Boise has makings of series’ best

Update: Well, opening act the Afrosonics got their set in before the storm hit. Unfortunately, the Suffers’ show has officially been canceled, and they will not perform at the normal rainout venue, Liquid.

When I first scanned the headliners for this summer’s Alive After Five concerts, one date jumped out at me: July 8.

That day has arrived. Houston-based band the Suffers, who call their music “Gulf Coast soul,” will lead the free weekly party in Downtown Boise. The group — still fairly new, as singer Kam Franklin explained to me — packed Neurolux back in February. It was on a Sunday night, too, which is no small feat. But it’s not entirely surprising. The Suffers’ groove is a natural magnet, particularly for anyone who likes to dance and let their eyes roll back into their blissful skulls.

Add in the fact that today’s high temperature is supposed to be in the 80s, and you’ve got the makings of the year’s best Alive After Five experience. So head down to The Grove. Let the Suffers bring you a little pleasure. Summer will be over before you know it.
