The Canyon Area Immunization Coalition will celebrate fully immunized children up to age 6 at a Give Me 5! Celebration from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 14, at the Nampa Civic Center. This is the tenth year of celebrating children who meet Idaho's immunization requirements. Families can enjoy games, clowns, balloons, door prizes, refreshments, face painting and many more activities.

A current immunization record is all you need to get into the free event and to be eligible for door prizes, including a grand prize trip to Disneyland for a family of four, valued at $2,700. Canyon County Commissioner David Ferdinand will serve as master of ceremonies. "As a public health nurse I know that immunizations are one of the safest ways to protect your child from diseases that can cause breathing problems, lung damage, brain damage, heart problems, blindness, or even death," said Jill Eversull, registered nurse for Southwest District Health. According to Eversull, not keeping current with immunizations not only endangers the unvaccinated child, but may also spread disease to those who have a weakened immune system such as grandparents, elderly family friends, friends with cancer, pregnant friends, and other young children. A recent survey conducted by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that Idaho is nearly 20% below the national average and ranks at the bottom with four other states including, Washington, Montana, Nevada, and Vermont.
