A Nampa police officer on patrol early Wednesday was the first to find a fire hydrant that had been knocked over by a car, leaving water to gush into the street, yards and two homes.

The damaged hydrant was discovered about 2 a.m. Wednesday on Togstad Street near Middleton Road, Nampa police Cpl. Don Peck said. The driver of the 1990s maroon Honda Civic, which had been reported stolen, left the scene, Peck said.

Three homes were affected. He said the water entered the lower level of a split-level and into one garage.
