A Meridian family getting ready to fry up a turkey Thursday got an assist from the Meridian Fire Department.
A family in the 4300 block of Neimann Drive called 911 for help at 2:38 p.m.
"The thermometer in the oil didn't show that it was reaching temperature. It (the heat) ignited the oil," said Meridian Fire Capt. Rod Shaul at Fire Station No. 2.
Shaul said the cook tried to use extinguishing powder on the oil fire, but that didn't work.
"So we just put the lid on it and suffocated the fire," Shaul said.
Shaul said the family didn't get to fry their Thanksgiving turkey - the oil was burned and the fryer was overheated - but they didn't go hungry.
"He had already smoked some prime rib, so they ate that," Shaul said.
Shaul said the firefighters at Station No. 2 feasted on a deep-fried turkey earlier in the day.
