Slumping Thomas aims for turnaround as Boise State men take on Eastern Washington

The former WAC freshman of the year hasn't scored in double figures this season.

BSU WOMEN LOOK TO STAY PERFECT

Boise State will look to remain unbeaten Tuesday when the Broncos (4-0) play at Utah Valley (2-3) in a nonconference game.

Balance has been key for coach Gordy Presnell's team, which is scoring 77.5 points per game. Six BSU players are scoring at least 6.5 points per game, led by seniors Tasha Harris (18.5) and Jessica Van Hoogen (15.0). Van Hoogen was named the WAC player of the week for her performance in last week's wins over Portland State and Idaho State.

Janie Bos is the top rebounder(6.8 per game) for the Broncos, who have a plus-7.7 margin on the boards this season.

One area BSU would like to see improve is its 3-point shooter. The Broncos are only 22.7 percent (15-of-66) this season.

Boise State senior guard Anthony Thomas is off to a slow start, and the Broncos are hoping his performance Saturday at Wyoming was his low point.

For the first time since midway through his redshirt freshman season, Thomas didn't score or have an assist in a game. He turned the ball over five times and played 16 minutes in the 87-61 loss at Wyoming - the fewest minutes he's played since logging 13 against San Jose State as a sophomore.

Thomas hopes to reverse his fortunes Tuesday when the Broncos (2-2) play at Eastern Washington (2-2) in a nonconference game.

"I think I'm just in a little slump right now," said Thomas, who has 13 assists and 17 turnovers in four games.

Thomas said part of the problem is working in three new players - forwards Reggie Arnold and Daequon Montreal and guard Wes Perryman - to the rotation.

"As a whole, we aren't all on the same page right now," Thomas said. "We've watched film. It's all fixable for us, it's just getting to the right spots and getting everyone on the same page."

Thomas has yet to score in double figures and is averaging 5.0 points per game. Last season, he scored 9.5 points per game and reached double figures 16 times.

The lower scoring isn't a big concern to coach Greg Graham, who attributes it to having more capable scorers on this year's team. But the turnovers are a different story.

"That's where I think he's pressing too much to try and get too much done," Graham said. "He's pressing, and that's when the turnovers have come."

Thomas has been productive in his career. The former WAC freshman of the year has 355 career assists and is fourth on the school's all-time list. He needs 148 assists to pass Steve Connor at the top. Thomas had 151 assists last season.

"If he has a year like he did last year, he might break the record," Graham said.

Thomas isn't focusing on records. His No. 1 concern is to get Boise State back on track Tuesday and build momentum for Saturday night's home opener against North Texas.

"This game is big for us to stay above .500 and get on a nice little win streak to get our confidence up so we can get rolling," he said.
