Idaho colleges notebook: Westminster, Lewis-Clark St. win at Golden Rule Shoot Out

Westminster College of Salt Lake City defeated the College of Idaho 77-69 on Saturday night at the 23rd annual Duane Wolfe Memorial Golden Rule Shoot Out men's basketball tournament in Caldwell. Westminster, ranked No. 9 in the NAIA Division I national poll, will share the tournament title with Lewis-Clark State, which defeated Northwest 83-70 in the first game of the day. Matt Ballenger had a monster night for the Coyotes (1-2), scoring 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting, including five 3-pointers. Craig McGee added 18 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Crusaders fell to Cal State Monterey Bay 57-54 at the WOU/Phoenix Inn D2 Shootout in Monmouth, Ore. Jen Williams, a senior post from Centennial High, scored 14 points to lead the Crusaders (1-1). NNU hosts its Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Johnson Sports Center in Nampa.

NCAA CROSS COUNTRY: Northwest Nazarene freshman Barak Watson, a graduate of Columbia High in Nampa, finished 38th to earn All-American honors at the Division II national championships in Evansville, Ind. Watson clocked a time of 32:30.1 to become the first NNU Division II Cross Country All-American (top 40 qualify).

NAIA CROSS COUNTRY: The College of Idaho men and women finished fourth overall at the national championships in Vancouver, Wash. The women finished seventh behind Stephanie Helm (20th in 18:40 over 5,000 meters), and the men were 10th behind Greg Montgomery (29th in 25:49 over 8,000 meters). It was the highest team performance in program history, and both runners were named All-American.
