The past 24 hours or so weren't easy on former Boise State star Coby Karl, who's career path was hanging in the balance as the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers worked on cutting their roster down to the league-mandated 15.

The waiting ended when coach Mike Brown called Karl on Thursday and told him he was on the roster.

"He definitely reminded me that I'm on a non-guaranteed contract," Karl said. "And any trade or free-agent pickup and I could be cut at any time, so he told me to continue to work."

Karl's backup plan was a return to the NBA Development League and the Idaho Stampede.

"Just knowing whether I was coming home to Boise or I was going to be here was very nerve-racking," Karl said, "as nerve-racking as it's been in the past couple years."

So instead of playing in Qwest Arena in front of a few thousand fans, Karl finds himself in a star-studded locker room with LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal. Karl is no stranger to stars - he was a teammate of Kobe Bryant's in 2007-08 with the Los Angeles Lakers.

"Both Shaq and LeBron are hilarious guys to be around as teammates," Karl said. "Both of them are very happy every day and have a lot of energy and joke around. It makes it real easy to be around them. They just have a good feel for themselves."

NBA teams had until Thursday to finalize their 15-man rosters. Only 12 of the 15 players can be activated for games, while the other three are relegated to practice status.
