The Boise State football team broke new ground again Sunday.

The Broncos are ranked No. 4 in the initial 2009 Bowl Championship Series standings.

That’s the highest ranking ever for a team from one of the five conferences that don’t receive an automatic BCS bid.

The Broncos are behind No. 1 Florida, No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Texas. Cincinnati is No. 5. The BCS standings are used to determine some of the qualifiers for BCS bowls.

The standings are based on the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, Harris poll and six computer ratings. The Broncos are fifth in both polls and average computer ranking.

USC, which is fourth in both polls despite a loss to Washington, is 11th in the computers and No. 7 overall. Cincinnati, which is fourth in the computers, is sixth in both polls.

Boise State’s previous highest BCS ranking was seventh in 2004.

TCU of the Mountain West, the Broncos’ main competition for a BCS bid, is No. 8. Oregon is No. 11, BYU is No. 16 and Utah is No. 18.

Meanwhile, Boise State moved up one spot in the USA Today poll to No. 5 but dropped one spot in The Associated Press Top 25 to No. 6 on Sunday. The Broncos remained No. 5 in the Harris poll.

Boise State moved up in the USA Today poll because of the loss by Virginia Tech.

However, in the AP poll, USC and Cincinnati passed the Broncos. USC also jumped the Broncos in the Harris poll.

Alabama replaced Florida as No. 1 in the AP poll. Florida remains No. 1 in the USA Today poll.

Here are the BCS standings.
