KTVB will show Boise State football games, but not Bronco home hoops games

The economy was a big factor in the decision, according to the station's general manager.

Boise State men's basketball coach Greg Graham said he has a team that fans will enjoy watching this season.

And to do that, they will have to leave the house and go to Taco Bell Arena.

"We are not planning to televise any home games," said Brad Larrondo, the senior assistant athletic director for promotions and marketing at Boise State.

KTVB and Boise State announced a new one-year television contract Monday that means every football game will be televised this fall, including up to seven on the NBC affiliate.

The biggest difference in the contract is the absence of basketball home games. KTVB, which became the Broncos' television partner in 2005, has aired several home games in previous seasons.

"Hopefully more people will come out because they won't be able to see the games live on TV," Graham said. "We're going to be a very good team for people to watch."

Instead of showing home games, KTVB will look at "select road games," Larrondo said. One of those is the Jan. 25 game at Idaho.

Doug Armstrong, the president and general manager of KTVB, said the economy was a driving force behind the decision to scale back basketball coverage.

"The fact we're not doing as many basketball games is a sign of the times," he said. "It's hard to get advertising support for that many games, and (games) cost a lot to produce.

"Frankly, they could have been robbing a little bit from the ticket sales at home games. All around, we can save a little money and BSU might be able to sell more tickets. It seemed like the right thing to do in a recession like this."

The contract also calls for Boise State to pay for air time for basketball and football games in exchange for additional advertising spots, absorbing some of the risk. It isn't a financial boon.

"I don't think the intent is revenue No. 1," Larrondo said. "It's more exposure and fan relations."

The deal is more of a partnership this year, Larrondo said, because of the economic climate. Boise State can make back its investment by selling its advertising spots and perhaps by selling or trading the production of home football games (for basketball coverage) the production of home games to visiting teams' TV partners, Larrondo said.

"We had to find a different way to make sure the fans could still see the games," he said. "We had to form a different model."

The one-year contract bridges the gap until Learfield Sports assumes control of the Broncos' media and sponsorship rights on July 1, 2010. Learfield will be involved in selecting a TV partner for 2010 and beyond.

Boise State needed to find a partner for this season because it bundled advertising spots in its existing sponsorship packages.

The football games also will air in the Twin Falls and Spokane markets, and likely in Eastern Idaho, too.

Mark Johnson (play-by-play) and Tom Scott (color commentary) will return for football broadcasts. Armstrong said no decisions have been made about a football sideline reporter or basketball announcers.

KTVB's football schedule tentatively includes games against Miami, Ohio (Sept. 12), Bowling Green (Sept. 26), UC Davis (Oct. 3), Hawaii (Oct. 24), San Jose State (Oct. 31), Idaho (Nov. 14) and New Mexico State (Dec. 5).

The other six games are slated for ESPN or ESPN2.

For the Hawaii game, KTVB could pick up the Warriors' feed rather than send people to Honolulu. Armstrong said that decision has not been made.
