Stanford and Oregon told Grant Hedrick he was too short to play quarterback for their football teams.

Boise State had no such problem with the 6-foot product from Independence, Ore. The Broncos offered Hedrick a scholarship Saturday and he committed 30 minutes later.

"They said my mechanics were very good and my arm strength was fine. They only thing they doubted was my height," Hedrick said about Stanford and Oregon. "Boise State didn't see that was a factor."

Hedrick made his comments Monday on KTIK's "Idaho Sports Talk" with Jeff Caves and Statesman sports editor Mike Prater.

Hedrick, who will be a senior this year at Central High, completed 192-of-282 passes for 3,192 yards as a junior. He threw 42 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. Hedrick also rushed for 1,326 yards and 15 touchdowns for Central. Hedrick's father, Shane, is Central's coach.

Hedrick said he had offers from Air Force and Portland State, but opted for Boise State after attending the Broncos' camp.

"I fell in love with the place," he told Caves and Prater. "Everything about it felt right."

The Broncos have a history with undersized quarterbacks. Current starter Kellen Moore is 6-foot. Ryan Dinwiddie was 6-foot-1. Jared Zabransky and Taylor Tharp were listed at 6-foot-2. All were first- or second-team All-WAC selections.

"I knew I could play. I didn't think height was a big deal," Hedrick said., who will join BSU in 2010. "I just needed someone else to believe that."

In addition to Moore, the Broncos currently have junior Mike Coughlin and freshmen Joe Southwick and Mike Tamburo at quarterback.
