Former Idaho Vandals tight end Eddie Williams fulfilled his draft-day dream Sunday despite a nasty knee injury that could have derailed his pro career.

The Washington Redskins selected him with the 12th pick of the seventh round - No. 221 overall.

Williams tore the anterior cruciate ligament and damaged other parts of his right knee last season against Boise State. He still isn't fully recovered, but he expects to be ready for training camp.

If not for the injury, he likely would have come off the board much sooner.

"Everyone wants to get drafted when you're growing up," Williams said. "I was fortunate enough to be one in a million."

Williams said he's about 80 percent healthy and can run routes. He is expected to compete for the starting fullback job in Washington, agent Derrick Fox said.

Williams learned his destination in a phone call with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder. It was a sweet moment after five months of rehabilitation.

"It was real discouraging going through rehab like I went through," Williams said. "I kept the faith, kept pushing, and things fell into place."

Idaho punter T.J. Conley also got an NFL job, landing a free-agent deal with the New York Jets, Fox said.

Idaho State wide receiver Eddie Thompson got a free-agent workout with the Cleveland Browns, Fox said. Thompson has a backup opportunity in Canada with the BC Lions, Fox said.
