Now that Jeremy Childs has secured an invitation to next month's NFL Scouting Combine, the former Boise State wide receiver will have 40 yards to prove his draft worth to scouts, coaches and general managers.
"He's got to show that he can run well," said Matt Striegel, an attorney with Ascent Sports Management, which represents Childs. "If there's any question on Jeremy, it's the speed. People want to see how fast he runs (the 40-yard dash) at the combine."
Childs, who became the third Bronco in two seasons to forego his senior season for the NFL, has been working out at Athletes' Performance in Los Angeles this month to prepare for the combine. The invitation-only event is a good indication that multiple teams believe a player is draft worthy.
This year's combine will be held Feb. 18-24 in Indianapolis. Former Bronco running back Ian Johnson also has an invitation.
"It's an incredible opportunity. There are around 40 wide receivers in the nation that get invited, and he's one of them," Striegel said.
Few doubt Childs' hands or route-running ability after he had 168 catches for 1,999 yards and 17 touchdowns in three seasons with the Broncos.
But his speed - and, to some extent, character - will be evaluated at the combine, where teams can interview prospects at length. Childs was suspended for a semester after his sophomore season and a game during his junior year.
