Columbia High senior and 4A boys cross country state champion Barak Watson posted the top finish by an Idaho runner Saturday at the Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) in Portland as he placed 27th in 15 minutes, 48.60 seconds.
Nicole Nielsen, a Borah senior, and 5A girls state champion Liz Brandon, an Eagle junior, placed 32nd (18:33.20) and 33rd (18:33.30), respectively, in the girls championship race.
The trio qualified for NXN at the Northwest Regional three weeks ago at Eagle Island State Park.

LAKE CITY RUNNER QUALIFIES FOR FOOT LOCKER NATIONALS: Lake City (Coeur d'Alene) junior Cody Helbling qualified for the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships on Saturday by placing seventh at the West Regional in Walnut, Calif., with a time of 15:49. The top eight runners qualified for the national meet next Saturday in San Diego. Boise High junior Eric Fitzpatrick was Idaho's second finisher at the West Regional in 17th (16:22). Highland (Pocatello) senior Alex Litzsinger posted the top finish by an Idaho girl in 42nd (19:52). Complete results are available at www.footlockercc.com.
