The Mustangs sat at No. 2 for three weeks, watching three teams jump over them in the CBS MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Softball Rankings. But Eagle finally claimed the No. 1 ranking in the latest rankings released Tuesday, becoming the first team in state history to reach the top of the national poll.
Lake City owned the state’s previous top ranking, finishing second at the end of the season in 2013.
Eagle improved its record to 24-0 Monday with a 15-0, three-inning victory over Centennial in the first round of the 5A District Three Tournament. The Mustangs have outscored their opponents 326-21 entering their district semifinal against Mountain View at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain View.
The Mavericks ended Eagle’s perfect season last year in the district semifinals.
