The Chicago Red Stars used the second pick of the second round Friday to select 2011 Centennial High graduate Sofia Huerta.
Huerta finished her senior season at Santa Clara University this fall with 17 goals, more than half of her team’s total, and earned the co-West Coast Conference Player of the Year award. The forward also garnered third-team all-American honors for the second year in a row.
Huerta played for Mexico at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2012 and entered a 2013 game against the U.S. as a second-half substitute for Mexico’s senior team.
The National Women’s Soccer League is a nine-team league founded in 2013 as the top women’s soccer league in the U.S. Its third season begins April 10.
