Madeleine Sheils (Bishop Kelly High), who’s attempting to qualify for the LPGA Tour, fired an 8-under 63 on Saturday and leads after two rounds of the $100,000 IOA Golf Classic.
She had a first-round 70, and after Saturday’s personal-best round, has a one-stroke lead over two other golfers going into Sunday’s final 18 holes.
“I just felt great going into this week and I was excited about the way I was playing,” Sheils said on SymetraTour.com. “I kind of got in a good frame of mind and I knew I had nothing to fear and lose and just trusted myself all day.”
Sheils is 17th on the Symetra Tour money list, and the top 10 go to the LPGA next season. Entering this tournament, she was $10,545 out of the top 10.
The Symetra Tour Championship is next week in Daytona Beach, Fla. It is the final event of the season.
Sheils won the FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship in Battle Creek, Mich., in June. She pocketed $15,000 for the victory.
“I’ve played well all year long and I’ve gotten better every single week it seems like. This was a great time for the scorecard to show it, but regardless of how I played I wasn’t going to be afraid to fail,’’ said Sheils, 26, a former All-Big Ten player at Nebraska.
