Boise State sophomore quarterback Brett Rypien was named to his second national award watchlist Thursday, the first one specific to his position. He was named to the Davey O’Brien Award watchlist, the award given to the nation’s top quarterback. He is one of 30 quarterbacks on the list, the only one from the Mountain West.
Rypien threw for 3,353 yards in 11 games last season (10 starts) and had 20 touchdown passes. He was named first-team All-Mountain West and capped off the season earning offensive MVP honors in the Broncos’ 55-7 Poinsettia Bowl win. Rypien was named to the Maxwell Award (top offensive player) watchlist on July 5.
Also on Thursday, the Doak Walker Award (top running back) watchlist was announced, but surprisingly it did not include Boise State junior Jeremy McNichols, who ran for 1,337 yards and scored 26 total touchdowns. However, Boise State said there was a miscommunication, and McNichols was later added.
