Boise State senior safety Darian Thompson was named a second-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America on Monday.
It’s the third major All-America honor for Thompson so far this year. He was named to the third team by The Associated Press and honorable mention by SI.com. He was a CBSSports.com second-team All-American last year.
The AutoNation FWAA All-America Team is one of the five NCAA-recognized teams. So is the AP team.
Thompson leads the Broncos with five interceptions this season. He has 63 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss. Before missing the last two games of the regular season with a concussion, he was leading the team in all three of those categories.
Thompson also broke the Mountain West career record for interceptions this season. He has 19.
He is expected to return to action for the Dec. 23 Poinsettia Bowl against Northern Illinois. Thompson also will play in the Senior Bowl, an all-star game for top NFL prospects.
Northern Illinois cornerback Shawun Lurry made the FWAA first team. He leads the nation in interceptions.
Here is the full FWAA team. I was on the FWAA All-America committee but didn’t participate in the defense call because of a scheduling conflict.
