Oklahoman columnist Berry Tramel, a respected voice in Big 12 country, wrote Friday that the Big 12 should add Boise State and BYU.
His case for adding the Broncos includes the football program’s national brand appeal, the smooth transition of TCU from the Mountain West to the Big 12 and the ability to stage late-night games in competition with the Pac-12.
The column doesn’t include any reporting suggesting that the Big 12 is thinking the same way as Tramel, but he outlines solid reasons to make the move. He also points out that the Big 12 has indicated that it would add at least one team to the east if it expands.
The Big 12 is down to 10 schools and Oklahoma’s president has been outspoken in his desire to get back to 12.
Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said last week that he doesn’t consider the Big 12 a threat to his membership.
“I haven’t heard anyone other than the Oklahoma president say, ‘We should be more than 10 members,’ ” Thompson said.
