We’re counting down the days to the Boise State football team’s first spring practice with daily blog posts on players to watch. Spring ball begins Monday and ends April 13. The Spring Game is April 11 (5 p.m.).
3. DT Tutulupeatau Mataele
The 6-foot-3, 294-pounder known as “Deuce” was a projected starter going into fall camp in 2013 – and yet he hasn’t played a down for the Broncos.
Mataele sat out the last two years because of a problem with his academic record at his junior college. He was out of school in 2013 and suspended by the NCAA in 2014.
Never miss a local story.
That leaves him one year to play one season of major college football – in 2015. He has stuck with the sport through the two years on the sideline and the Broncos have honored his scholarship. He was the Defensive Scout Player of the Year last fall.
“We haven’t seen him play in a game,” defensive coordinator Marcel Yates said. “What we see from him, we think he can be pretty good. Hopefully he will be pretty good. He’s just a guy who does everything right. He’s smart. He shows up every day to work. For him to go through what he’s gone through and still show up every day to work, it speaks to what type of player he is.”
