We’re counting down the days to the Boise State football team’s first spring practice with daily blog posts on players to watch. Spring ball begins March 9 and ends with the Spring Game on April 11.
9. DB Mercy Maston
Maston was one of three senior defenders who redshirted unexpectedly last year and returns to provide some extra depth this year.
Maston is intriguing because he was slated to play nickel last season. As the depth in the secondary dwindled, the Broncos used linebacker Tanner Vallejo in that spot instead. But they’d like to get back to a five-DB alignment — and Maston could be a key figure in that approach.
Maston tied for 11th on the team with 44 tackles in 2013 as a junior college transfer. He started four games at cornerback.
He missed the first half of last season with an injury. Rather than playing the second half, he redshirted to preserve a full senior season.
Given that JC transfers often make major jumps in their second seasons and the extra time Maston received to work on his game, he should be in the running for a starting job this year.
