SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Boise State and Make-A-Wish have connected again to provide a memorable experience for a child with cancer.
High school sophomore Hayden Adkins of Henrieville, Utah, will serve as the Broncos’ honorary captain Wednesday at the Fiesta Bowl and watch the game from the Broncos’ fan section.
Adkins was diagnosed with soft tissue cancer in 2012 and has been battling the disease for two and a half years, according to Boise State. He completed chemotherapy Dec. 1.
Adkins grew up as a Boise State fan. His wish was to attend the Fiesta Bowl if the Broncos were in the game.
He accompanied the team to its walk-through at University of Phoenix Stadium on Tuesday and had lunch with the team. He received his own set of Fiesta Bowl travel sweats, like the players, and will be introduced at the team’s pep rally Tuesday. He will be on the sideline during pre-game warm-ups Wednesday.
This will be the first time that Adkins has watched the Broncos play in person, according to a story by the Arizona Republic.
"Being born in Boise made me a fan," Adkins told the Arizona Republic. "It's pretty awesome to be here and I'm excited to be here with my brothers."
Boise State hosted Make-A-Wish kids at home games in 2010 and 2011.
