Boise State junior tailback Jay Ajayi was named a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award on Wednesday.
He’s one of 10 semifinalists for the award given to the nation’s top running back. Three finalists will be named Monday and appear at the Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 11.
Ajayi ranks third nationally in yards from scrimmage at 172.3 per game and 1,723 total. He’s behind Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon (199.2) and Indiana’s Tevin Coleman (181.0). Ajayi is fourth in all-purpose yards (172.3 ypg), 10th in rushing (128.0 ypg) and fifth in scoring (12.0 points per game). He leads the nation in offensive touches with 302 — 38 more than anyone else. He also ranks fifth among running backs in catches (42) and fourth in receiving yards (443).
Other semifinalists include Ameer Abdullah (Nebraska), Javorius Allen (USC), Cameron Artis-Payne (Auburn), Matt Breida (Georgia Southern), Tevin Coleman (Indiana), James Conner (Pittsburgh), Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin), Devon Johnson (Marshall) and Duke Johnson (Miami).
