UPDATE: Boise State junior tailback Jay Ajayi on Tuesday was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week.
The award goes to the top offensive player in the Football Bowl Subdivision who was born in Texas, graduated from high school in Texas, played at a Texas junior college or played at a Division I university in Texas.
Boise State junior tailback Jay Ajayi was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Ajayi generated 280 yards from scrimmage in Saturday’s win against Colorado State.
He carried 33 times for 219 yards and two touchdowns and made four catches for 61 yards and a third touchdown. His 280 yards from scrimmage broke the school record.
Ajayi has a national-best 459 yards from scrimmage on a national-high 69 touches this season. He ranks fifth in rushing yards with 305. He’s second in carries with 53. He’s tied for 12th in catches with 16.
Wyoming linebacker Jordan Stanton (13 tackles, one sack, fourth-down stop) was the defensive honoree. UNLV kicker and linebacker Nicolai Bornand (54-yard field goal) was the special teams honoree.
Boise State had not had an offensive player of the week since tailback D.J. Harper on Dec. 3, 2012.
Ajayi is the fourth running back in school history with multiple 200-yard games. The others are Cedric Minter, Ian Johnson and Brock Forsey.
