It’s cut day in the NFL.
Teams must trim their rosters to 53 players by 2 p.m. Mountain on Saturday. There are 21 former Boise State football players in the NFL. We’ll track their fates here.
The Detroit Lions announced their cuts Saturday afternoon. Quarterback Kellen Moore was not among them, meaning the former Boise State star is on the Lions' initial 53-man roster. It will be Moore's third season on the roster.
"I felt like the preseason went pretty well but you never know,” Moore told the Idaho Statesman. “These rosters, they're very dynamic. ... It turned out well."
Never miss a local story.
Moore led Lions quarterbacks this preseason in passing yards (361), yards per attempt (7.1), touchdowns (three) and rating (108.4). He did not throw an interception and completed 35 of 51 passes.
He also played well during the 2013 preseason but seemed to take a step forward this year despite learning an entirely new offense. He played with the third team.
Moore led four scoring drives Thursday as the Lions beat the Buffalo Bills 23-0. He threw a game-winning touchdown pass in the preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.
“I certainly felt like I played better,” he said. “The biggest thing is being more consistent. Having a chance — however little or much you play in a game — when you get in, in all four (games), it’s important that we produce. And I felt like we were able to do that this year.”
Rosters likely will change as teams claim some of Saturday’s released players on waivers. Unclaimed players become free agents Sunday and many likely will land on an NFL team’s 10-man practice squad.
Charles Leno Jr., a seventh-round pick by the Chicago Bears, made the team's initial 53-man roster as a reserve offensive lineman. The Bears announced their cuts Saturday afternoon.
Undrafted free agent Geraldo Boldewijn, a wide receiver, was waived by the Falcons with a hamstring injury and received an injury settlement. That means he will be paid by the Falcons through the estimated end of his injury. He will be a free agent again and likely will make a practice squad at least.
The Cardinals reached an injury settlement with offensive lineman Nate Potter.
