Following a huge 61-46 win over perennial Mountain West power San Diego State on Sunday, the Boise State men's basketball team received four votes in Monday's USA Today coaches' poll. It is the first time this season the Broncos have received votes in one of the two major polls (the AP top 25 did not have any votes for the Broncos this week).
Sixteen teams are ahead of the Broncos in the "others receiving votes" category outside the top 25 in the coaches' poll. The Broncos appeared in the first six weeks of the poll last season, getting as close as four teams outside the top 25.
The Broncos (17-6, 7-3) have won seven straight games after losing four straight and host Air Force at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
"If you had told me on the plane ride back from Wyoming (on Jan. 10) that this is where we would be sitting I wouldn’t have believed you," Rice said. "We knew this was a big task in front of us and we wanted to fight our way one game at a time and this is what these guys have done."
The win has put the Broncos back in the NCAA Tournament picture. Their RPI after the win is 40th, right in the range of where many at-large spots are selected. Some national writers took notice, too — CBS Sports said "Boise State staked its claim as the team of February," while ESPN's Joe Lunardi as the Broncos first among his "next four out" in his latest bracket.
