Boise State athletes start strong at NCAA track prelims
Junior David Elliott won his heat of the men’s 1,500 meters in 3 minutes, 44.15 seconds — the fastest of Thursday’s qualifying times — to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals at the 2015 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Boise State senior Jordin Andrade finished first in his heat of the men’s 400 hurdles in 50.93, and teammate Fernando Martinez also advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals with a third-place finish (51.56) in the same heat.

Senior Emma Bates, the defending national champion in the women’s 10,000, took fourth (34:29.05) in the prelims to qualify for the national meet. Mackenzie Flannigan ran an 11.42 (18th) in the women’s 100 to qualify for Friday’s quarterfinals, and sophomore Karyna Armstrong was the only Bronco who failed to advance, taking 37th (183 feet, 2 inches) in the women’s hammer.
Flannigan runs in the 200 on Friday and Bates in the 5,000 on Saturday. Also scheduled to compete for the Broncos are Alexandru Terpezan (men’s 200, Friday), Michael Vennard (men’s 5,000, Saturday), Marisa Howard (women’s 3,000 steeplechase, Friday), Allison Jeffries (Eagle High, women’s pole vault, Friday), Tessa Murray (women’s 5,000, Saturday) and Jordan Ward (Lakeland High, women’s high jump, Friday). The top 12 in each event advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 10-13 in Eugene, Ore.
Thursday’s other results and the remaining athletes scheduled to compete:
Hayli Worthington (Minico High) qualified for Friday’s quarterfinals of the women’s 400 hurdles in 20th place with a time of 59.81. Logan Henderson (Pocatello High) failed to advance in the men’s 400 hurdles after running a 52.71 to finish seventh in his heat and 32nd overall. Katie Nicholls (Centennial High) did not advance in the women’s 1,500 (4:48.22, 45th). ISU senior Caitlin Maulin (Boise High, women’s pole vault) will compete Friday.
Alycia Butterworth (women’s 3,000 steeplechase) and Holly Stanton (women’s 3,000 steeplechase) compete Friday night.
•OTHERS WITH VALLEY TIES:
San Francisco’s Kate Jamboretz (Boise High) ran a 4:41.75 in the women’s 1,500 for 42nd place. San Jose State’s Cambree Harbaugh (Mountain View High) finished 28th in the women’s long jump (19-05.5). Jamboretz runs in the 5,000 on Saturday, and Oregon State’s Sam McKinnon (Mountain View High) competes in the women’s 3,000 steeplechase Friday. Louisville’s Brittany Owens (Borah High, women’s triple jump, Saturday) is at the East Preliminary at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
