2008 Natural Wonders

wren.JPG

This house wren is having a little trouble figuring out how to get small branches in a smaller hole to build a nest in this birdhouse located in my yard. A pair of wrens started moving in a couple of weeks ago. This style of house is built for nuthatches, chickadees or wrens. Yes, there are certain birdhouses for certain birds. Wrens tend to be very vocal and bossy so it’s no wonder they laid claim to the house. “A frequent visitor to birdhouses, the house wren is a common sight and sound in backyards across the country, “ says the Web site www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds. “The suburban-loving little brown bird often takes over all the birdhouses in its general vicinity, keeping all other species from using them.” Bird experts say it should be a month from the time the birds build a nest to the time when the youngsters leave the nest. I’ll keep watching.
