If you're fishing on New Year's Day, you're pretty dedicated, and frankly, you probably don't need my help figuring out where to go. But some people might have the urge to kick off the New Year with a fishing rod in hand, and if so, you have more options than you might imagine. So rather than highlighting one place and one way to fish, I will offer three.
CLEAR LAKE: Fly rod float tubing in January? Not only is it possible, it's also a lot of fun. It costs a reasonable $10 a day for adults to fish Clear Lake, and if you haven't bought your 2009 fishing license, yet, no worries. You don't need one because it's a private lake. The clubhouse will be open New Year's Day, so you can grab a burger and a bloody mary.
It's stocked with big trout, and people have been catching them. It's catch and release only, so don't plan on taking one home for dinner.
MAGIC RESERVOIR: Ice fishing has gotten off to a good start. You can catch perch and trout, and Magic has had pretty consistent fishing in the last couple years. One problem, you might have a hard time finding a place to park
SOUTH FORK OF THE BOISE: If you can stand the Arctic temperatures and brutal winds, it can be a cool (literally and figuratively) place to fish in the winter. You can catch trout and whitefish on flies and occasionally on dry flies. It's not easy, but landing a big trout down there in winter is truly memorable.
