The Bureau of Reclamation is holding an open house regarding increased security at Lower Deer Flat Dam from 4 to 6 p.m. today in room 111 at the Canyon County Courthouse, 1115 Albany St., Caldwell.

The reason for the open house is to clarify how the Bureau of Reclamation intends to proceed with security enhancements at Deer Flat Dam and explain how the agency will involve the public.

In Phase I, scheduled to be completed in January, the Bureau of Reclamation will purchase security gates that could block vehicles from the dam if there is a threat.

It is unlikely to change public travel across the Lower Embankment of Deer Flat Dam.

In Phase II, the agency will work toward a permanent solution to reduce vulnerability at the Lower Embankment of Deer Flat Dam.

Reclamation will explore alternatives later this fall in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act, which will provide more public comment.

Reclamation will have staff available to answer questions.

Anyone with questions can call Erika Lopez at (208) 383-2254 or Katy Loomis at (208) 383-2248.
