Foothills trail users can learn about etiquette, donate to trail maintenance, and receive discounts from businesses under a new "TrailSmart" program created by two local trail users.
Brian Wiley and Matt Johnson of Boise launched trailsmart.org as a way to educate trail users while also showing support for the trail system.
“We started this project because we love our foothills trail system. We love them so much in fact that we each log between 1,200 and 1,500 miles on them each year,” Wiley said. “We both want to do our part to help maintain and grow them so that we can continue to use this wonderful resource.”
The website has a short video about proper trail use and a test. Participants who answer questions correctly and make a donation of $20 or more will become TrailSmart certified.
Participants also receive a packet with an annual TrailSmart sticker and a packet of discounts from local retailers who support the TrailSmart initiative. Sponsors include Anytime Fitness, Bob’s Bicycles, Foot Dynamics, George’s Cycles & Fitness, Shu’s Idaho Running Co., Idaho Mountain Touring, Ken’s Bicycle Warehouse, Therapeutic Associates Physical Therapy, and World Cycle & X-C Ski.
Tax-deductible donations support the maintenance of the 140-plus miles of trails managed by the Ridge to Rivers partnership. For more information about Ridge to Rivers, go here.
