GRAND PRIZE: Photographers strive to capture a moment, and Boise resident Christian Nafzger did it in an unexpected way. Last November, he took a break from his office near the Boise River to cast for steelhead. Fish and Game annually stocks the river starting in November, and it's popular with anglers. After a few casts, Nafzger hooked and landed a steelhead. Then he got down in the river with his Canon Powershot, a waterproof, point-and-shoot camera, and took an up-close photo of a fish with the river's fall colors in the background. The judges liked the way the autumn leaves complement the fish's colors. Nafzger won a Pentax K500 digital camera with an 18-55mm lens. He also won the top prize in 2008.
FIRST PLACE: Mottaz captured this photo of Stanley Lake minutes after the sun went down behind the Sawtooth Mountains. The Sawtooths are always a favorite destination for photographers because the jagged peaks are photogenic year-round.
Mottaz won a Trek Tek Pod Pro tripod/monopod/walking stick.
SECOND PLACE: This picture was taken near Bull Trout Lake in the Stanley Basin, where Lowery frequently goes with her family, including grandkids. “They love spending time with Papa in the canoe fishing and just paddling around,” Lowery wrote. “Of course, the dog needed to go as well. They love spending time in the mountains and camping and hanging out.” Lowery won a Lowe Pro Transit Sling camera backpack.
THIRD PLACE: Rogers took this photo with a slow shutter speed to blur the river as a rain shower passed over Mount Heyburn. The photo was taken just off the road to Redfish Lake. He won a Joby Gorilla Pod.
FIRST PLACE, YOUTH, 14 AND YOUNGER: Ulin, 12, caught early morning steam rising off Warm Lake east of Cascade. She won a $50 gift certificate to Idaho Camera.
FIRST PLACE, YOUTH, 14-18: Ege wrote that these cedar wax wings “seemed as if they knew me. They showed off their good side and began to strut their stuff,” he said. The 16 year-old won a Promaster Digital Enthusiast sling backpack.
