Idaho’s voice in the Republican presidential primary becomes amplified nationally by voting in the March 8, 2016, primary, thus underscoring our civic duty to understand the issues and candidates, and then cast informed votes.
As I see it, America’s at a crossroads. The challenges of yesteryear have given way to new threats to our economy, families and security. Yet, these new threats also present opportunities for America to rise above mediocrity and remain the greatest force for good that the world has ever known. Attaining greatness requires a visionary president who is prepared to meet challenges head on — one who is willing to pursue a bold, conservative agenda for a New American Century.
The leader who can usher in this New American Century is Marco Rubio. As a sixth-generation Idahoan, I appreciate how Rubio approaches challenges the same way we do, with hard work, integrity and common sense. His ideas for making America stronger align closely with our own values — Idaho values.
Rubio understands today’s global economy and geopolitical landscape differs from the past. We are the only economic superpower that still taxes companies when they bring money earned overseas into the United States where it should be reinvested in American jobs. He will end that double taxation, meaning that hundreds of billions of dollars will flow back home to the United States for reinvestment in our future.
Never miss a local story.
He will also deal with costly federal over-regulation that has drained three-quarters of a trillion dollars from our economy since 2008. Rubio’s plan calls for limiting the economic costs federal agencies inflict through their burdensome rules, while still protecting and preserving what we hold most sacred.
Creating new American jobs is only a first step. Rubio understands we must change the way we deliver higher education and equip students with the tools they need to succeed at modern jobs in a global marketplace.
Far too many students graduate from college with mountainous debts, no jobs and inadequate skills. Rubio — who until four years ago was still paying down his own student loans — will require schools to disclose what students may expect to earn with a specific degree, thus making better-informed consumers. His plan will also make student loan repayment manageable by tying monthly payments to actual earnings after graduation.
Even with these reforms, he knows one institution is tantamount for America’s future, and that is the family. As a father of four young children, he believes families play a role that the government cannot, and should not, fulfill. His plan would allow parents to take overtime as paid time off work, so they may take children to medical appointments or chaperone field trips. He’ll also increase the child tax credit so parents may better afford education, health care and other needs. And he will ensure families’ constitutional rights to teach their children traditional values and rights are always protected.
Our children deserve to inherit a nation that is stronger and more prosperous than the one we were born into — one where our international friends trust us, our foes respect us, and the American dream is attainable. That’s what our grandparents wanted for our parents, and it’s what Idahoans like you and me are working to do for our kids. With the right president, a prosperous New American Century is within our grasp. Marco Rubio is the right leader, and with our support he’s ready to rebuild the foundation of American greatness for our children and grandchildren.
