Regarding Mr. Ehlert’s meditations on Independence Day. July 4th is the day we commemorate the colonial move to independence from a monarchial/paternalistic society characteristic of all, not only Western, societies of the 18th century. This move to independence began earlier and was a revolutionary change in the nature of an individual citizen’s relationship to government and the elites who controlled it. Gordon Wood’s book “The Radicalism of the American Revolution” is a well-written and enlightening description of these changes and well worth reading to fully understand the true revolutionary character of this day. Reminded me of some aspects of the current political discourse.
