How sad to read about the tragic death of Jenny Steinke in the Oct. 26 Statesman. It is another example of a “death by poverty” that was entirely preventable. I am grateful for Canyon County Community Clinic in Caldwell (where I work) and other such clinics that offer their services to the underinsured and uninsured at no cost to the patient. It is an honor to work side by side with the unselfish doctors and nurses who donate their time and energy to help people in similar circumstances as the Steinkes. These clinics are often the first line of defense for some, but more needs to be done — much more. Our hearts go out to Jason Steinke in his time of loss, and we will keep the family in our thoughts and prayers.
