While I was happy to read the article in the Oct. 20 edition about exploring new treatment for persons with schizophrenia I was dismayed to see the headline on Page 1. One of the first ways we as citizens can help is to use the phrase “people with schizophrenia,” not schizophrenics. It will go a long way toward removing the stigma of mental illness if we can remind ourselves that these are people first. Defining people by their illness, whether it be a mental or physical illness, does real harm. Often people with a mental illness come to think of themselves as their diagnosis. Seattle has a campaign called Words Matter. I would like to see Boise adopt such a campaign. Let’s get rid of labeling and remember that we are all people first.
