Two letters appeared in the Statesman July 7 that win the disingenuous prize. One concerned the most recent shooting spree that left nine dead in a South Carolina church and the other the Confederate flag controversy. The first writer trots out the worn, tired argument of the NRA that guns don’t kill people. Well, bubba, guns do kill people. The NRA, the gun manufacturers and the gun crazies in America have made it possible for any criminal or nut case to acquire a gun. Example? Gun shows. Any criminal, nut job or terrorist can walk into a gun show and buy any gun they want, no questions asked. The second writer, defending the Confederate flag, asks if we should bulldoze Arlington National Cemetery because it represents war. What rubbish. First of all, Arlington is the final resting place for thousands of American service men and women who died for the ideals this nation represents. The Confederate flag represents racists, bigots and traitors. The last time I checked, there weren’t traitors to the United States buried at Arlington. Nor did Union soldiers fight to perpetuate the enslavement of their fellow man. The Confederate flag belongs in a trash can.
